Tra i servizi che posso fornire c'e' la traduzione dall'italiano all'inglese. Il mondo di Internet e' saturo di siti Web la cui sezione in lingua straniera e' stata evidentemente tradotta da persone che non sono madrelingua. Nella peggiore delle ipotesi, la traduzione non e' comprensibile mentre nell'ipotesi migliore potrebbe risultare comica e minare alla radice l'immagine della ditta. Anziche' far colpo sui visitatori di lingua inglese, per i quali dopo tutto la sezione e' stata allestita, si ottiene il risultato diametralmente opposto.
Posso assicurarvi che cio' non capitera' MAI con me. Sono un madrelingua inglese e qualsiasi traduttore che lavori con me, in qualunque lingua traduca, deve essere madrelingua a sua volta. Per assicurarvi accuratezza nella traduzione, il testo tradotto e' quindi sempre controllato da un madrelingua della lingua in cui viene prodotto il documento finale.
Per cercare di garantire una traduzione coerente mi avvalgo dell'ausilio di un apposito programma per computer. Questo software non effettua la traduzione, bensi' ne semplifica il processo memorizzando la maniera in cui ho tradotto certe espressioni o frasi nel passato e proponendomi di riutilizzare tali soluzioni. Mi consente anche di gestire e mantenere un glossario specifico per ogni cliente cosi' da poter usare per ognuno la terminologia inglese preferita. In questo modo il cliente ha la garanzia che ogni attivita' a me affidata sara' conforme allo stile espressivo ad esso appropriato.
Il mio approccio alla traduzione differisce da un lavoro all'altro perche' tradurre non e' semplicemente un processo di trasformazione di parole da un linguaggio in un altro. Eccovi alcuni esempi.
DOCUMENTI LEGALI, MEDICI & TECNICI I documenti legali e medici devono essere tradotti molto accuratamente e il piu' letteralmente possibile per quanto la lingua in cui vengono tradotti permetta. I documenti tecnici devono altresi' trasmettere esattamente il significato del testo originale.
MANUALI PER USO TECNICO Un manuale di uso per l'industria sara' probabilmente letto dagli operatori d'officina, persone che potrebbero non avere un alto livello di istruzione. Cosi' mentre viene trasmesso il significato dell'originale, il documento deve essere trasmesso con parole che essi siano in grado di comprendere facilmente e sara' necessario evitare strutture grammaticali complicate.
MATERIALE PROMOZIONALE & SITI WEB Per quanto riguarda il materiale promozionale, come quello che si trova
negli opuscoli o sui siti Web, trasmettere l'immagine che la ditta vuole proiettare di se stessa, riveste la massima importanza. Questo richiedera' certamente una traduzione piu' llibera che comunichi le idee in modo appropriato per la lingua specifica.
RIVISTE INTERNAZIONALI Un documento che deve essere pubblicato in tutto il mondo, come una rivista internazionale, deve essere tradotto in modo da risultare comprensibile a persone di madrelingua non inglese. Questo richiedera' che il vocabolario da usare sia molto semplice e la struttura della frase non sia complicata.
CORRISPONDENZA Le lettere devono essere tradotte in una forma che trasmetta non solo le idee dell'originale ma anche un tono appropriato allo scopo. Questo richiede familiarita' sia con il linguaggio che con la cultura delle persone a cui ci si rivolge, requisiti posseduti probabilmente solo da un madrelingua.

I can offer translation services from Italian to English. The Internet is full of multi-language sites where the foreign language section has been translated by someone who is not a native speaker. At worst, the translation is unintelligible, and at best it is very humorous and completely undermines the professional image of the company. Instead of impressing the English speaking people for whom it is intended, it has exactly the opposite effect.
I promise that will NEVER happen with me. I am a mother-tongue speaker of English and any translators who work with me must be mother-tongue speakers of the target language. To ensure accuracy of translation, the translated text is then checked by a mother-tongue speaker of the source language.
To help ensure consistency of translation I use a computer program which manages the process for me. It does not translate, but makes the process easier by remembering how I translated a phrase or expression and giving me the option to re-use it. It also allows me to maintain a glossary for each client to make sure that I use the English terms that they each prefer. This gives the client the assurance that all the work I do for them will conform to the style that is appropriate to them.
My approach to translation will differ from one assignment to another because translation is not simply a process of transforming words from one language into those of another. Take these examples.
LEGAL, MEDICAL & TECHNICAL Legal and medical documents must be translated very precisely and as literally as the target language will allow. Technical documents must also convey exactly the meaning of the original text.
TECHNICAL USER MANUALS A user manual for industrial equipment will probably be read by operators on the shop floor, people who may not have had the best of educations. So, while conveying the meaning of the original, it must be translated in words that they will be able to understand easily and must avoid complicated sentence structures.
PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL & WEBSITES For promotional material such as is found in brochures or on a web-site, it is more important to convey the image that the company wants to project of itself. This will almost certainly call for a much freer translation that communicates ideas in a way that is appropriate for the target language group.
INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINES A document which is to be published world- wide, such as an international magazine, must be translated so as to be understandable to people whose mother tongue is not English. This will require that the vocabulary used be very simple and the sentence structure uncomplicated.
CORRESPONDENCE Letters must be translated in a form that conveys not only the ideas of the original, but also a tone appropriate to its purpose. This requires a familiarity with both the language and the culture of the target audience that only a mother-tongue speaker of the language is likely to possess.
